The Sailing Life
ROCKLAND, Maine – Two passengers on the overnight schooner Ladona admire a sister sailboat named the Steven Taber on the smooth water of Penobscot Bay off Rockland. The two schooners are part of the nine-vessel Maine Windjammer Association, sailing out of Rockland and nearby Camden. Some of the windjammers can carry up to 30 passengers for multi-night trips along the Maine coast. Each schooner has a backstory (a New England industrialist commissioned the Ladona in 1922 as a private racing yacht), and all continue to unfurl their sails and perpetuate Maine’s seafaring traditions.
