The Historic Shores of the James River

The Historic Shores of the James River

JAMESTOWN, VIRGINIA - The statue of Captain John Smith, the first colonial governor of the Virginia Colony from September 1608 to September 1609, overlooks the James River in historic Jamestowne, part of the Colonial National Historical Park. A walking self-guided tour of the park takes you by the bronze statues of Smith and Pocahontas; monuments like the 103-foot, granite Tercentenary Monument which resembles the Washington monument; and places like Old Town – including the James Fort ruins, restored Jamestown Church, and Statehouse ruins – and the Voorhees Archaearium, a museum with colonial artifacts and stories.
