Historic Meeting
CLARKSVILLE, Indiana – This statue of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark is in Falls of the Ohio State Park, just across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky. Lewis and Clark met at this spot in October 1803 before assembling the full complement of their crew to explore the Louisiana Purchase in May 1804 near St. Louis, Missouri. Historian Stephen Ambrose described the Indiana meeting this way: “When they shook hands, the Lewis and Clark Expedition began.” The park tells that story and many others, especially the story of the area’s geology and why the once-treacherous Falls of the Ohio was the point Lewis and Clark met there.
