Glowing Flowers
LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO - Fields of yellow glowing flowers sprout up every year in the early spring along the foothills of the Organ Mountains on both the east and west sides turning the grounds into yellow-flowered carpets. I took this one located on the west side overlooking Las Cruces, NM, as the sun rose above the peaks of the mountains. It was one of a series I took to show the land saturated with yellow poppies. I underexposed this image three stops to make the mountains and sky darker; attached a polarizer filter to the lens with the aperture set to f/22 to put the sparkle in the sun; and illuminated the flowers with an off-camera strobe to show the pedals still curled shut before they open once the sun shines down.Photo by Norm Dettlaff.
