Forever May It Wave
ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA – Also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial, the United States Marine Corp War Memorial is a powerful national monument dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives to the country since November 1775. Located outside Arlington Cemetery, the statue represents one of the most famous events of World War II – the hard-fought battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. The original event was captured in an iconic photograph and later made into this sculpture of the six 32-foot soldiers raising the 60-foot bronze flagpole. By proclamation from President John F. Kennedy in 1961, the flag at the top of the pole must fly at full mast 24 hours a day, one of the few official sites where this is required.
