Coronado Bridge
SAN DIEGO – The San Diego-Coronado Bridge needed to have a clearance of 200 feet for Navy ships at Naval Base San Diego, but an A-to-B design would have been too steep for car, truck and bus traffic. The solution was a design that made it longer and incorporated an 80-degree curve. The bridge is 2.12 miles long (11,179 feet), and it opened in 1969 during the 200th anniversary of San Diego’s founding. This view is from the deck of a City Cruises harbor excursion, one of the most popular activities for groups in this southern California destination. (Photo by Tom Adkinson)
